Welcome to Year One
Our Year 1 team is:

Miss Juntunen will be teaching on Friday afternoons.
Hello everyone!
We hope you have had a wonderful Easter break and are ready for the final term in Year 1!
Phonics - We are following the Supersonic Phonic Friends programme for phonics which the children were introduced to last year. This combines an active and fun way. Click here for a sneak peak at how a Supersonic Phonics lesson works. We will be embarking on Phase 5 phonemes and graphemes this year, including alternative spellings for familiar sounds. For phonics practise at home, you can find free games and resources at Phonicsplay website, providing exciting ways to recognise real and fake words, tricky words and with segmenting and blending sounds.
Children should continue to read and be read to daily, a variety of texts with different genres e.g. non-fiction information books, fairy stories and recipe books to build upon vocabulary and understanding of each genre's style. Reading books will be changed on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Literacy - In class, we are focusing on a story called "Dogger" about a little boy who loses his beloved toy dog. Using the story as a focus, we will be working on how to use the main themes to guide our imaginations before writing part of our own story. We will use skills from phonics lessons and elements of drama to guide us with our writing. In keeping with the coronation of King Charles III, we will be writing a recount about what happens at a coronation celebration.
Maths - This term, we will be learning about multiplication and division, fractions, place value to 100, money and time. Numberblocks episodes on iPlayer are fun ways for your children to become familiar with mathematical concepts through songs.
PE Days - Monday and Wednesday afternoons. This term, we will have a tactical games and gymnastics and dance focus. Please can children ensure they have full kit in school at all times as well as jumper or long bottoms. Due to weather, we might change PE days and one of our units is outdoor so will be going outside if cold.
Please use tapestry to celebrate any work or exciting activities your child does at home - we love seeing what they get up to outside the classroom!
If you would like to talk to us about any aspect of life or have any questions, you can do so through contacting the or by emailing r.pearson@holy-family.lancs.sch.uk.
Take care,
Mrs Callagher

We have enjoyed learning about Creation and Noah's Ark this half term. The children have created this amazing display for our KS1 shared area. They used sponges to paint and print for the water and the ark and drew 2 of each animal.
